With the introduction of the telecom giant Jio, the average internet usage of we Indians has grown considerably. And with this, some popular web services like YouTube have earned a lot of popularity in a very short span of time. Seeing this, YouTube has launched its own YouTube Music App to grab the online music streaming app market in India.
Previously launched online music streaming apps like Gaana, Wync Music, Jio Saavn and Hungama Music have already made a tight grip in the Indian digital market. Spotify has launched its music app in India a week before and now YouTube has also jumped into this competitive market.
So, I decided to make a quick review of the YouTube Music app and check whether is it really worth considering over its other rivals?
YouTube Music is Not Free
Yes, YouTube Music is not free. Although, you can use its basic features the most essential items can only be unlocked in its premium version.
The basic version includes zero shuffling, official songs and music, and remix versions. In addition, the paid items includes the basic features along with ad-free music, audio mode/background play and downloads for offline access.
The free trial allows you to experience its premium features for 3 months. A payment method needs to be added so that they can charge you afterward. You won’t be charged during your free trial and you can cancel the subscription anytime.
You may have to pay a bit more than ₹99 as your bank may charge you a currency exchange fee.
The Major Drawback
The major drawback of the YouTube Music app is that it doesn’t offer a background play feature in its free version, unlike its rivals. Jio Saavn, Gaana, Wnyc Music, Hungama Music, all offer background play feature in their free versions.
The Mi users get a free pro version of Hungama Music (except unlimited downloads) for a lifetime. Jio
The Monthly Subscription Plan
YouTube Music has a monthly subscription plan for ₹99/month. The introductory price was ₹129/month but the price was slashed down as other platforms, like Jio Saavn and Gaana, were offering a ₹99/month plan. However, Wync music is the only streaming app that offers a plan of ₹49/month which is quite cheaper.
YouTube Music Offers Video Downloads
No other music apps offer its users to download song videos in their local memory. But this feature of YouTube Music makes it unique. Although the video downloading feature is available in its premium version the other streaming platforms don’t offer such features in their paid versions even.
For Samsung Galaxy S10 Users
Like other rivals who offer exclusive offers to their exclusive customers, YouTube Music has also attached a similar feature in its premium version.
Samsung Galaxy S10 users will get a free 4 month of YouTube Music premium which they can use to enjoy all the premium features.
The Live Performance Feature
You don’t need to head YouTube in order to watch the live performances of your favorite artists. Meanwhile, you can watch live performance videos of various artists without coming out from the YouTube Music app. You can find the same video on YouTube as well. This is a good collaboration as some users love to listen to live unplugged versions.
The Best Feature
Google Claims that YouTube Music has a very intelligently built smart search feature that helps you find the song even if you don’t remember the name. You type the lyrics that come to your mind in the search bar and the YouTube Music App will find the song for you. I tested this feature and got really impressed as it was working quite accurate.
I also tried searching for songs by their lyrics on other online music platforms, but they didn’t give me satisfactory results. Except for Gaana that showed results somehow close to the search query. On the other hand, Wync Music and Hungama Music got completely failed.
I am attaching five different results based on my three different searches over five different music streaming apps.
- “Chorro Bekaar Ki Baaton” a part of the famous “Kuch To Log Kahenge” song lyrics sung by Kishore Kumar.
2. “Kya Us Gali Mein Kabhi Tera” a part of the famous “Khamoshiyan” song lyrics sung by Arijit Singh.
3. “Maanga Jo Usne Ek Sitara” a part of the famous “Dekhte Dekhte” song lyrics sung by Atif Aslam.
Screenshots have clarified that YouTube Music App has shown the most accurate and personalized search result based on the lyrical search query. This is a great feature that makes it stand unique in the queue. In short, the YouTube music app is undoubtedly worth considering.
The only thing YouTube Music App should add is the audio mode or background play in its free version. This is a very essential feature for any online music streaming app.
